Background:Xenical, a prescription drug, is an oral medicine and is used in more than 80 countries worldwide. It is used to treat obesity, the most common cause of weight gain in adults and a leading cause of chronic disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of Xenical in obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
Methods:This multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted in 27 countries. All patients were initially considered for treatment of obesity in obese patients (BMI ≥27 kg/m2) by an ophthalmologist or an ophthalmologist on referral to a urologist. All patients were randomized to receive a 1-mg dosage of Xenical (Xenical 120 mg) or placebo. Treatment duration was determined by the investigator and the patient information leaflet. The study was conducted on patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The study was registered in the Internationalobesity Database, in clinicaltrials.gov as XENICAL, and in clinical summary ().
Results:On average, the total study period was 4.6 months with the mean age being 53.8 years. The mean body mass index was 28.9 kg/m2 and the mean HbA1c was 9.2%. The mean patient age was 67.4 years. The mean number of body weight was 7.8 kg and the mean HbA1c was 10.3%.
Conclusion:Xenical, a prescription drug, is an effective and well tolerated treatment for the treatment of obesity in patients with T2DM. The study is of value in the understanding of the role of Xenical in treating obesity in obese patients.
Table 1 Clinical characteristics of patients who received the treatment of Xenical for T2DMThe patients were randomized to receive 1-mg dose of Xenical 120 mg. The median number of body weight was 7.8 kg (range: 3-20 kg), and the mean number of body weight was 10.3 kg. The patients were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
A total of 26 patients were enrolled in the study, of whom 21 met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and were randomized to either the placebo or Xenical.
The mean age of the patients was 56.5 years, and the mean patient BMI was 28.9 kg/m2.
The mean baseline BMI was higher in the Xenical group than in the placebo group (P = 0.037). However, there were no significant differences in weight changes, fasting and postprandial glucose or lipid profiles over the 3 months post-treatment. No serious adverse events were noted.

X, Xenical; placebo, Xenical 120 mg. P, post-treatment.All patients completed the study and were well-controlled with no serious adverse events. The mean number of follow-up visits was 2.4 years. The patients were not treated with drugs that can cause an adverse reaction. No other complications were noted.
Xenical is a safe and effective treatment for patients with T2DM. This study provides a basis for a better understanding of Xenical's role in treating obesity.
Table 2 Baseline characteristics of patients who received the treatment of Xenical for T2DMThe patients were randomized to either the placebo or Xenical.
The mean baseline BMI was 27.3 kg/m2.
The mean number of body weight was 7.5 kg (range: 3-20 kg) and the mean number of body weight was 9.3 kg (range: 3-20 kg). There were no significant differences in weight changes, fasting and postprandial glucose or lipid profiles over the 3 months post-treatment. There were no serious adverse events.
No other serious adverse events were reported.
